The tournament

One of the largest scholastic chess tournaments in the Midwest: five rounds, sections from kindergarten to 12th grade, and grandmaster guests.

The 25th was on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at TQL Stadium.

How it began

Dr. Steve Pomeranz taught his three sons, Corbin, Jory and Cody, to play chess. Leaving a Bengals game in the fall of 2001, they had the idea that Paul Brown Stadium would be a great venue for a chess tournament.

They expected 50 to 100 students at the first tournament, in spring 2002 in the stadium’s Club West Suites. When 350 children arrived, they knew they were on to something much bigger.

Chess in Schools

  • Critical thinking
  • Concentration
  • Patience
  • Sportsmanship

Since September 2013, trained instructors have taught chess during the school day, building “critical thinking, concentration, patience, and sportsmanship.” Instructors are paid, work 2 to 10 hours a week, and get training.

Chess taught me resilience – even if you lose, get back up and try again.
